VERNON, NY – Vernon Downs took some time out to give back to the community Saturday.
They handed out free chicken barbecue meals to the public.
Cars started lining up around 3 pm at the entrance of Vernon Downs to drive up and receive their meals.
Only two meals per car were allowed.
Included in the meal, besides the chicken of course, were baked beans, baked potato, and a roll.
Vernon Downs Assistant General Manager Arthur Woods said when it came to cooking the chickens, they left it to the professionals.
“The volunteer fire department of Vernon Center, they cooked all the chicken. They’re famous for their chicken barbeque. We paid for all the material and they did the labor. To me, I’m a local. This means everything. To put food on the table of someone who might not have it means everything. That’s why we’re here. It’s what we do.”
500 chicken barbeque meals were available to the public.
