VERNON, N.Y. -- Vernon Downs will begin its 68th racing season Saturday without fans, as the racetrack awaits state reopening guidelines.
In a media day today, the track unveiled a full slate of racing from April through Breeders Cup weekend in November. Fans have not been present at races at the track since November of 2019.
Vernon Downs has experienced financial strife in recent years, having lost upwards of $150,000 a month at times, and has threatened closure on several occasions. Track officials expect the state guidence within the next several weeks, and hopes to allow a limited number of spectators soon.
