UTICA, N.Y. – The man accused of shooting at state police during a standoff in Verona this past August appeared in Oneida County Court Thursday.
Justin Carter, 35, was involved in a seven-hour standoff with state police after barricading himself in a barn off of Route 46 in Verona. Police say he used a long gun to shoot at officers and police vehicles during the incident.
He pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted murder in September.
Michael Spano, Carter's attorney, asked the judge for more time to consider a plea offer as the defense awaits a report from a psychiatrist who examined Carter.
"Judge, Mr. Carter spend 14 years in the military, and Dr. Lesswing needs those records before he can complete his report. A request was made, but you have to bear in mind, it's the military, and it's taking al ot longer than anticipated," said Spano.
Carter will return to court on Nov. 14.
