Autopsies conducted at Albany Medical Center show that both victims died of asphyxia from smoke and products of heat combustion.

A resident of the third apartment, Brian S. Mushtare, 60, was rescued from the porch roof by members of the Lowville Fire Department while the house was ablaze.

Mushtare was taken to Lewis County General Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, lacerations and minor burns. He has since been released.
