UTICA, N.Y. --- In an effort to keep New Yorkers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Cuomo issued an executive order delaying village elections statewide until the April 28 primary election.
County Executive Anthony Picente making a similar announcement in his daily press briefing.
"Our top priority has been keeping New Yorkers safe and stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus," said Cuomo.
Picente said that villages will not be affected by this decision and that the current leaders will remain in office for the time being.
"We're talking about 12 villages in Oneida County, many of them uncontested. They can be postponed for a week or so. Life will go on. The people will remain in their offices under state law until such time when another election can be scheduled," said Picente.
The county will be providing daily press briefings about the COVID 19 response.
