HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. – April the Giraffe, who became a household name in 2017 when people around the world watched her pregnancy live on YouTube, has died at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville.
April was euthanized at the advice of her veterinary team, due to the impact of her worsening arthritis.
Over seven weeks, April drew 232 million YouTube live views before giving birth to her son, Tajiri, live in April of 2017.
Viewers also watched a pregnant April give birth to son, Azizi, in March of 2019. In June of that year, she was retired from the park’s breeding program. Sadly, Azizi died at a Texas zoo in the fall of 2020.
According to the park, giraffes in captivity have a life expectancy of 20-25 years old. April was 20.
A statement from Animal Adventure Park's veterinarians says April started showing signs of mobility problems last summer, and veterinary imaging showed she had arthritis in her left hind leg.
The vets say they tried to slow the disease's progression, but it became so severe that they couldn't control her comfort.
The park has asked people to share memories and photos of April on its Facebook page.
