WESTERN, N.Y. -- Heavy rains in the Town of Western forced water over the banks of the Mohawk River Monday afternoon, damaging crops and washing away a bridge.
The Westernville Fire Department put out a urgent message Monday afternoon, for everyone on Hillside Road to evacuate immediately.
The flooding began around 2:30 p.m.
Fire Chief Michael Anania of the Vol. Fire Co. of Western, says five families are displaced right now and one family had to be rescued.
"We got called that there was flooding in the area, said Chief Anania. "When we arrived at the scene, Hillside Road was pretty flooded. So we needed additional resources in order to get the people out that were trapped in that area. Some people were in their home, some were in their car. They had rescue teams from state fire, and other departments, and they went in with rafts and life jackets and stuff."
Many roads in the Town of Western, and Ava, were flooded and littered with debris.
