WESTERN, N.Y. – The Western fire department has been helping with flood recovery since early Thursday morning, when crews were called in to rescue people from their homes and assist with evacuations.
Firefighters have been helping with cleanup efforts ever since, but Friday morning, they were called back to their normal duties.
Fire Chief Mike Anania says around 3 or 4 a.m., his team had to turn off the power at Delate Lake State Park because of a fire in an electrical box. The campsites with be without power until further notice.
While the flooding has mostly subsided, residents are still cleaning up trees and debris, reminiscent of just a few weeks ago in the wake of an EF1 tornado that tore through the area.
Anania says people have still been sending donations to the fire department to help with recovery efforts.
Anyone who’d like to donate can make checks out to: The Volunteer Fire Company of Western, and mail them to the department at PO Box 17, Westernville, N.Y., 13486.
