UTICA, N.Y. - The portion of Armory Drive between Tilden and Hilton Avenues will be renamed Will Smith Memorial Way, after the late Proctor High School graduate and New Orleans Saints football star.
The Utica Common Council unanimously passed an ordinance at a meeting Wednesday night to rename the section of the street after Smith.
Smith was killed in 2016 in a road rage incident.
Council woman Samantha Colosimo-Testa came up with the idea and she says she is happy to finally see it move forward.
"I know how much Will Smith meant to everybody in this community and he never forgot about the people in this city and as a Proctor graduate, I knew how much Will meant to Proctor and the pride that he brought so one of the things I wanted to do is a memorial for him," Colosimo-Testa said. "One of his quotes was, and a dear friend of this gave me it, was 'if there's a will, there's a way' so I thought a perfect way to name it was Will Smith Memorial Way."
Colosimo-Testa says there will be a formal ceremony to put up the signs and a plaque to honor Smith.
