children die in an early-morning fire in herkimer. good evening-- i'm don shipman. kristen is off tonight. fire tore through 244 east steele street around 6:00 this morning. two adults made it out of the home. in spite of their efforts to save them, their three children- boys... ages one, six and seven -- died in the fire. newschannel 2's joleen ferris is live at the scene with the very latest information.joleen? thanks, don. this fire has taken an unbearable toll, claiming the lives of three children, ages 1, 6 and 7. fast, furious and unforgiving fire tore through 244 east steele street, in herkimer, at 6:00 this morning, doing the unthinkable-keeping the two adum saving their three children, boys, ages one, six and seven 1:56 "we were told that they were awoken by a smoke detector but they couldn't get to the back part of the house. the parents made their exitout the front windows. and tried coming back around to get in the other way, and couldn't" six hours after the fire began, the charred, collapsed shell of a home was still smoking. firefighters and investigators swarmed the scene. shortly after noon, they formed a solemn line, as the coroner brought out the remains of the youngest child. 30:25 "they have recovered the body of a one-year-old boy" 310 "e one-year-old was basically in the room the parents told us he was in. they found him in that area" only minutes later, with the assistance of k9s trained in recovery, the remains of a second child were discovered and removed from the home, before the devastated firefighters who fought so hard to douse the flames....and bring them out alive 32:59 "it's one of those things that'll probably hit later on, when the quiet time comes" the deadly house fire in herkimer
