still cold.highs in t businesses in herkimer have rescue crews stretched thin ...a live report is straight ahead. and... a home is burned to the ground and three people are being treated f smoke inlation after this early morning fire in forestport. and...breaking news. the verdict is in in the murder trial of the yorkville man accused of his brother's murder. good afternoon--im jason powles. you see this haze of smoke behind me...that is covering parts of herkimer county as firefighters were called to not one but two businesses for fires in herkimer. so much smoke from the two you can see it on our tower cam. one fire is the town of herkimer the other in the village of herkimer. at one point d-o-t closed route 5 to traffic but it has sinced reopened. lets go live right now to the site of the fire in the village at the old v-i newschannel 2's joleen ferris has the very latest...joleen what can you tell us. heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the ole vi on south washington street sometime after 8 a.m. crews are at the scene attempting to gain control of the fire, and trying to keep adjacent building from attempting to gain control of the fire, and trying to keep adjacent building from suffering the same fate. the bar is right next to the herkimer american legion, across from the old kmart building. firefighters from herkimer, ilion, mohawk, and little falls have responded. route 5 between main street and king streeithe villageof he down, but it has since beenreop there is no word on any injuries or a cause at this point. the buidling was cut up..... but not the rest of it the rest is on a slab. jason back to you. at least three people were rushed to hospitals after a fire early this morning in forestport. the home on woodhull road is destroyed. portions of the building collapsed as crews were fighting the fire. they say when they got on-scene the home was engulfed in flames. water had to be brought in and pumped from a portable pond onto the fire. national grid crews cut the power. woodhull road was shutdown from forestport to dustin road shortly after the fire started at 6:40 this morning. fire officials tell us the people rushed to hospitals suffered from smoke inhalation. breaking news the judge has told our crews in court a verdict is in for john ferguson, the man accused of killing his brother in their mother's yorkville home last summer. they jury found john ferguson not guilty on the second degree murder charge. guilty on the manslaughter charge... and guilty on the weapons charge. his brother, daryl died from his injuries in july of last year. again ferguson gulity of first degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. newschannel 2's racahel murphy was in court and will have a wrap upop tonight at five and six. the chenango county man found guilty of killing his adopted, disabled son...and setting the house on fire will be sentenced may 3rd. his wife's trial is set to begin april first. earnest franklin the second was convicted after a week-long trial. he faces 25 years to life in prison. franklinkilled his 16 year old son, jeffrey franklin...and tried to mask the evidence by setting the fire at their mount upton home franklin and his wife were both charged in case. today... witnesses continue to take the stand in the murder trial of omar ortiz, accused of killing deon williams on bleecker street in utica last summer. he's charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. ortiz was arrested a after the alleged crime in erie, pennsylvania. we expect the trial to last into next week. some prominent americans are facing criminal charges today, accused by federal prosecutors of paying bribes to get their children into elite universities. officials are calling this the biggest case of college admissions fraud they've ever handled. in all, 50 people have been arrested in the nationwide scam, including parents and coaches. nbc's pete williams has more. the colleges are some of america's most elite -- and hardest to get into, includg yale, georgetown, and stanford. the fbi says eight universities in all unwittingly admitted students with phony athletic records or inflated test scores, paid for by their parents' bribes. s/ joseph bonavolonta - fbi :17-:27 "we believe all of them -- parents, coaches and facilitators -- lied, cheated and covered up their cmes at the expen of harworking students and taxpayers everywhere." among those charged, "desperate housewives" star felicity huffman, full house" actress lori loughlin, corporate ceo's, and high- priced lawyers. the fbi says a california man arranged it all -- william singer, who ran a college prep business: s/ rick singer video :44-:48 "i understand the stress the college admissions process can put on yr family" he pleaded guilty tuesday to accepting a total of 25 million dollars to get students admitted as athletes -- even though many had never played a sport. singer says he used some of that money to bribe coaches, who put the applicants into their designated admission slots, and kept the rest for himself. singer also admitted paying test proctors to let someone else take a student's admissions exams- like the sat -
