WKTV - It's about to be a February Frenzy in Central New York.
Section III announced, Thursday, that it will be holding 'open sectionals' for winter team sports during the 2022 season due to the affect COVID-19 has had on teams throughout the year so far.
The Section III Athletic Council approved the temporary measure giving all teams throughout the section eligibility to compete in the postseason regardless of record. This applies to winter team sports of boys and girls basketball, boys and girls ice hockey, and boys and girls volleyball.
Teams are only required to have the minimum amount of players available to compete in order to participate in sectionals this season. This means we could see tournaments with upwards of 20 teams competing for a section title.
School districts will have the option to opt their teams out of sectional competition should they choose to do so, and will need to notify a sport coordinator prior to one week before the seeding meeting for that sport takes place.
Once seedings are set, if a team does not have the required number of players to compete, they will forfeit and their opponent will advance - there will be no replacement teams or re-seeding.
This open format applies only to the winter 2022 season, any decisions beyond that will be made at a later date.
Sectionals return this year after none were held for winter sports in the 2020-21 academic year.
This year's team sectional tournaments are scheduled to begin in mid-February.
